Crash And Burn

The hard drive on our computer at home died a sudden death yesterday.

With the BACK UP DRIVE sitting next to it, still in it's box, unopened. Yep, it's been sitting there for a couple of weeks now, waiting for me to stop playing Spider Solitaire and install.

Murphy saw that and just couldn't resist having a little fun.

I'm kicking myself. HARD. And I've randomly slammed my head onto my desk a few times today.

Luckily, the only thing of worth on the hard drive were pictures and videos (everything else is on a stick). Most of the pictures I can get from Kodak Gallery as I send out pics every month to friends and family. They have a lovely feature where you can get all of your albums on a disc.

But Kodak Gallery doesn't upload videos, so those are gone. And all the pictures from July that hadn't yet made it into an album (August's are still on the camera).

July was Gabi's birthday. I'm usually not terribly sentimental, but I'm pissed about losing July! I want to see my baby with her cake! Though it turns out that those are the only pictures we have of her on her birthday, because we got a little carried away with EATING the cake and forgot to take any other pictures of her that day.

We're going to see if we can retrieve something, anything, ourselves. But if that doesn't work, our budget is slim and I don't think it's worth it to fork over hundreds of dollars for one month's worth of pictures.

Damn me and my laziness.

Next step- determine if we are just going to replace the hard drive, or buy a completely new computer. We've been wanting to upgrade for a while, but since everything else in the tower is perfectly fine, it's hard to justify a brand new purchase.

The silver lining? I blog from work! So, yay, that won't be affected.

  1. Oh no. We've been there, and you would think it would make me more attentive to backing up all these things, but... yeah. I live in constant fear of losing everything again. Thanks for the kick in the pants to get on that.

You could always have a fake birthday this weekend and take pictures, I'm sure Gabi wouldn't mind. Ha!

I know the exact feelings you are having right now. My computer crashed about 2 years ago, and I didn't back up my pictures, I had to find someone to fix the whole computer and than pray they were able to save the pictures.... luckily they were... lessson learned!

  8. That, my friend, is one of my biggest fears. Every picture, video and memory of my children are tucked safely away on our computer. Of course we have a back up hard drive, but what happens IF! I'm so sorry about you losing an entire month, I would be out of my mind too.

  15. Oh, I am crying a river for you girl....I needed that kick in the pants to buy that hard drive I don't have yet.

"Everything else is on a stick"--I am laughing at this since I found you from my state fair post!!! There has to be money to be made on this irony somewhere. :-)

  19. OMG - I would cry a million tears if that happened to me. I'm in the process of transferring everything from my PC to the Mac... so I'm going to make sure I now back it all up. Losing luggage was one thing...

  20. How wrong is that?!
I've had issues with old computers where it warned me with messages so I was able to save and transfer things without loosing, but it's always in the back of my mind that it all could be gone.
I guess it's one of those live and learn lessons. I'm sorry it had to be at the expense of Gabi's birthday photos. :-(

  21. I leave that all to my husband so I take no responsibility if something happens BUT you bet he will be in trouble if something happens to my blog!

  22. Oh poor you.

Our computer got viciously attacked by a virus last Saturday night when they fixed it they stripped everything off. Fortunately the last 400+ pics were still on my camera but now I have to edit each one all over. Oh well at least I have them. Losing them all would have been the real tragedy.
