The Invisible People In My House Speak Five Languages Between Them

This conversation JUST went down.

Gabi: My invisible Aunt speaks English, French and Spanish. And she speaks French with my pretend big sister because my pretend big sister speaks Spanish. Right? And my pretend big brother speaks Japanese and teaches my pretend little brother how to speak Japanese and French. But not Portuguese. Because I am the only one who can speak Portuguese here. Right, mommy? And Daddy. And sometimes you, but not always. And, oh wait, my invisible Aunt also speaks Japanese. And what else? Oh yeah, and Spanish. And everyone can speak Spanish with each other, and English, but not French. Because only two of them can speak French. And my baby sister doesn't speak anything at all yet, but I think my invisible Aunt will teach her Japanese. So she can talk with all the other children!

Gabi takes a breath.

Gabi: Wow, mommy, that's a lot of languages at our dinner table! It's going to get noisy and no one is going to understand anyone else!

I swear this is pretty much word for word. One of the benefits of having my laptop on the table while we are eating dinner (I know, I'm so bad, but it doesn't happen often!).

The organizer in me is going to have to analyze that paragraph for contradictions.

  4. my neighbor said the other day she wants to buy a voice recorder that connects to the computer so she can tape her dinner conversations with the kids and save them for when they are older. I think this is better, that would make my head spin no matter when I heard it!

  14. Ha, ha! I just wrote a post the other day about Maddie rambling on like that. She does it all the time. I find myself screaming in my head because she is telling me something "for real" (as she would say) as opposed to something she thought up like your sweet Gabi.

I wonder what would happen if my girls were to pal around with yours...?

  16. This is my first time at your blog, so I don't know if this is a common occurance. But, I don't think she's pretending, it sounds to me like she's a very 'perceptive' little one who may actually be experiencing ghosts or spirits around her.

    Not far fetched.

  19. Something tells me your little one is going to be multi-lingual...meaning more than just three or four languages spoken fluently. If she's already open to it at this age...watch out mama!

  21. Too cute. My niece just announced to me the other day that she speaks 5 languages. She's almost right :).

We speak Portuguese and English, her Dad's family speaks Georgian (Republic of Georgia), she's learning Spanish in school...and I can't remember the 5th right now.

Kids are the greatest gifts on earth.

  27. That whole conversation was hilarious. And by conversation, I mean monologue. But the funniest part is the mental image of you taking it all down at the dinner table. TOTALLY something I would do.
