Guiltless Pleasure

My favorite time of day, by far, is at the very end of it. When I can finally slip into bed and lay my head down on the pillow. Even better is when the sheets are fresh and crisp, a bit cool to the touch, and smell like baby powder (my new all natural laundry soap fragrance). Absolute heaven. I'm usually out in less than a minute.

This is how I justify buying 600 thread count sheets. It's pretty much the only luxurious thing I own. Not counting my Coach purse that I used two gift cards and birthday money to purchase, which promptly fell victim to Gabi spitting Chinese food out of her mouth and staining it. It's impossible to have nice things when there are kids in the house to destroy them.

I've accepted that my furniture is the "kid furniture", that my carpet is only going to get worse, and that anything I want to keep nice, like my treasures from traveling abroad, will have to remain boxed for another 20 years. Yes, 20 years from now I'll finally be able to have nice things. I might even get a white couch just because I can.

But with sheets, it's a different story. They're one of the nice things you can have with kids. The more you wash them, the softer they get. And there might be a few stains from blueberry snacks or marker mishaps, but they're hidden from view under the comforter. What counts is the way the feel when you slide into them after a long day. It is one of the best feelings in the world.

It will be getting even better soon. Gabi just got her very own big girl bed! We have happily co-slept these last three years, but we are now ready to turn the family bed back into a kid free zone. And I'm going to celebrate with new sheets! Wonderful, soft, high thread count sheets.

So with all the sacrifices I make for my family, and all the items I have lost to accidents caused by my husband or child, buying sheets that make me swoon is worth a little budget revamping. It is my guiltless pleasure.

Do you have one?

  1. I'm not sure if these "qualify" as guiltless pleasures, but I have two.

    1) Lotion and soap for my face. Compared to my normal, average purchases, I spend an insane amount on soap and lotion for my face because I think it's really worth it. I anguish over buying $5 shoes on sale at Ross, but would easily spend much much much more than that for soaps and lotions at the makeup counter at Nordstroms.

    2) Suits and jackets for work. Because I'm on the shorter side, it's hard to find clothes that fit without having them altered in some way. So when I try on a suit and it actually fits, I don't care about the price and don't feel guilty at all about spending so much money on it. That item of clothing becomes precious and a wonderful luxury. Well worth the money if I don't have to hassle with alterations. I always justify it to my husband by saying it's for the advancement of my career...
