Books I Read In April

I polished off several books while I was in Brasil. Reading is a luxury I get to indulge in there, as my MIL is more than happy to take over kid duty.

This time I was smart and brought five with me. Why so many? Because last time I only brought two, and ended up forking over $45 for the only English language book we could find in the whole city (of a million people)!

It felt so amazingly good to be able to immerse myself in so many books.

I'm listing them here, more or less because I'm a list maker. It makes things nice and tidy.

The Fig Eater by Jody Shields
I love period novels, and this is an excellent one, giving a fascinating glimpse into 1910 Vienna and it's society. I couldn't put this murder mystery down!

Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan
The plot was incredibly clever and strange. A nice diversion from Tan's usual storyline.

Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier
One of my favorite authors. This was not my favorite of her books, but still had wonderful character development. A very enjoyable read.

Sister of My Heart by Chitra Benerjee Divakaruni
A wonderful book about the lives of two girls in India as they grow from young girls to young women. Some wonderful story twists that keep things interesting.

The Vine of Desire by Chitra Benerjee Divakaruni
A continuation of The Vine of Desire. Set in America, the tone of the book is completely different. The author is definitely talented, but I didn't like this book as much as the first.

I'm now reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. You know, because I'm learning to knit, and I thought I'd be a dork and read a book that matched.

  1. Sister of my heart, is the first one and Vine of desire is the second book. but i totaly agree the first one is so mystical. the second one is more rooted in the western ideal. I am reading a relly good book called my traitors heart about a south african exile returning after years away. very interesting take on aparthied from an afluent white kids guilty perspective. mom would like it if you need bday present ideas. love you. talk to you soon.
