Cantaloupe Found

Remember that cantaloupe that went missing after I let Gabi use it as a baby?

I searched high and low for that piece of fruit, and when I couldn't find it, or smell it, I figured Gabi or Gilberto had thrown it away, and I didn't really need to worry about it anymore.

And out of site, out of mind. I'd totally forgotten about the mysteriously missing cantaloupe.

This morning when I was sweeping in the living room, my broom hit up against something under the bookshelf part of the entertainment center. I tried to catch it with the broom, and an overwhelming stench shot out. Followed by a swarm of fruit flies.

I thought for a second that I'd found a dead mouse and flying flesh eating beetles were attacking me. I shot across the room, arms flailing to ward off the flies, spitting raspberries so that I didn't inhale any, trying to save myself.

When I realized I wasn't going to die, I got down on my hands and knees and peered under the shelf to find out what the heck was under there.

I could barely breath. The air was thick with the most disgusting, sweetly putrid smell I've ever encountered. I didn't know I'd found the cantaloupe until I pulled the smelly mess out and saw the remnants of a smiley face.

Aha.

So that's where it was all this time.

The rotted section was the part laying against the floor. And considering how long it was there, it's not as rotted as it could've been. So glad I found it before it liquefied and melted all over the living room floor.

My lesson has been learned. No more fruit babies.

Good thing you found it and they'll clear out soon.
Guess it'll be a while before you go handing out fruit babies, huh? ;)

  4. Ewwwww! I so would have left that for Gilberto to clean up. Wasn't he the one that drew the nice face on it for her?
    Glad it wasn't worse!

  5. Oh my gosh. I have been a bad bloggy friend and behind on my reading.

When I saw the first sentence, I thought - an almost 4 year old canteloupe that went this long without being found? Unbelieveable!

OK, now that I'm all clear, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. Isn't it weird how disgusting overripe canteloupe smells but how yummy (not in the case, of course) it tastes on the inside?

    I don't get it.

    I've missed you, friend!

  7. Oh - no!!! I hate finding food the kids have played with (or hidden) much later - it's never a good scene. So sorry you were scared out of your wits - too much imagination while sweeping, I think :-)

  9. SICK!! Ugh, that is the worst. My husband had a similar experience with a watermelon... I won't go into details since they're on my site, but suffice to say he feels your pain!!

    Glad you made it through!

  10. I actually thought about the cantaloupe baby last week while at the grocery store. I opted to buy a honeydew instead. (;

  11. I imagine if you told Gabi her baby has been found, she might be tramitized for life:

'this is what happens when babies lose their mommies'

I can't even fathom what that smell would be like...

  18. I'm so glad you found it! And please let me know how you get rid of the fruit flies.

I let one apple rot in the fruit bowl a week ago and I still have fruit flies flitting about. They are driving me crazy.

I am about to make a trap out of rotten fruit, milk and Cling Wrap. Google is a wonderful thing. Now if I will just actually make the thing!

  21. That is truly nasty. NAST!! :) Let me know if you have any trouble with the fruit flies...I have a few tricks on how to get rid of them. We had a bag of onions "melt" away in our pantry once and had many flies. ew.

  24. *barf* Thanks for that. You were doing a swell job of describing the scene for me, don't think I needed the photo! *lol*

Geez, I need to go wash my mouth out with some Listerine.

Oh and I may never ever eat another cantaloupe again!
