My Friend Just Bought Rice Bowls With Yen

Last week I had to say goodbye to a dear friend. Her Marine husband took the family to Japan for three years.

Japan!

No more popping over to each other's houses to talk about our days. No more sharing baked goods so I don't over indulge. No more watching our kids grow up day by day.

Thank goodness she has a blog and I'll be able to read about her adventures on a regular basis. She just wrote her first post from Japan, and I can't wait to hear more!

The brainwashing of Gilberto has already begun. I figure if I start talking about how awesome Japan is, then maybe, just maybe, he'll agree to forgo one of our Brasil trips and go to Japan instead.

  3. Random: We're going to Japan for Christmas this year.

The saying goodbye to friends is the worst part of being an expat. :( But as you said, there's always the chance you'll get to move and be closer to them once again. :) And in the mean time there's email, and skype, and blogs. :)

  4. You should go to Morocco instead. It's a lot closer. At least, time zone wise it's a lot closer.

Of course you have skype, right?

And especially the ones who let you overindulge!

  8. My brother has been stationed at Kadena (the AF base on Okinawa) for the last three years. He just extended because he loves it so much. I say.... GO GO GO. From what I've heard, and seen from pictures, it's a little bit of Heaven.

I must say also, I know how hard it is to be separated from a great friend. It sucks. Thankfully, true blue friendships, like the one you have with your friend, don't notice distance. :)

  9. Oh, if I could just tag along...and go EAT. I swear that's all I want to do on vacation any more. Sad!

If you'd like to see what it looks like where she is, go find "Whisper of the Heart" - it's a Japanese cartoon movie, and every time I watch it, I miss Hong Kong. I've heard it's VERY representative of a common middle-class neighborhood in Japan.

  11. Ahh.. I visited her blog and trying to get more information about military life... Lately i've been trying to get informed about all this moving that military people has to do and how this will affect me if i marry Kyle and he is still in the military. And to be honesty, i'm not sure if i like what i see!

in the blog "married to the military" i found a post today talking about managing career, kids and the marriage, and almost all of them say it's impossible to be married to a military man, have kids and have a real career.

I'm sorry about you "loosing" your friend, I hope you find someone to fulfill her place!

    hugs!

  12. It really does stink having to say goodbye to your closest friends, but today, everything and everyone is so accessible.

I hope that you still feel like she's in walking distance, in sharing distance and not too far - ever.

  20. It is so crappy when good friends leave esp. so far away---just tell your husband what awesome people they are there and how cool it is and oh I 'accidently' got our plane tickets for Japan instead of Brazil ;)

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  27. It's hard saying goodbye to an old friend. But before you know it, 3 years will have come and gone. Good luck with the separation...but Cyberspace will make communicating a whole lot easier, won't it>
