Where's The Underwear?

My MIL finally asked me where my underwear was.

She usually asks much sooner, right around the one week mark, and every time we have a verbal tug of war over my undies. Because there is no way in hell I'm going to hand over my underwear for her to wash and then hang in plain sight of the dinner table.

Every Brasilian house has a little wash room off of the kitchen. This is where you'll find the washer, and where clothes get hung to dry. Gabi could care less if her Curious George undies are on display for the neighborhood and dinner guests to see, but MY underwear will never hang there.

And now, after four whole weeks have gone by? Did she really expect me to willingly hand over 30 pairs of underwear after going to all the trouble to hide them for a month?

I actually brought 38, just to be on the safe side. And every single pair is going home with me to be washed in MY washer.

But my MIL doesn't know that. I told her I'd been throwing them away, just to make sure she didn't try to find them on her own.

  1. LOL!!!! You are right, the laundry rooms are right of the kitchen. I make a point in living my laundry room door closed all the time.

When I'm too lazy to take my underwear to the laundry place in the kitchen, I hang them in the bathroom. :P

  3. Ok, that is one of the funniest things I have ever heard! I'm going to be telling this story over and over, no will will believe that someone actually did that! (but I will never reveal my source).

I know those Brazilian kitchens, I can almost feel the balmy ocean breeze when I see that picture.

  12. hahaha! I had already forgotten about our hassle to wash and dry clothes in Brasil. I hated having to hang them and wait days for it do dry, and worse than that, iron them! When I go back home to visit my parenst I bring enought clothes just so I don't have to do wash clothes down there. Not because I am embarassed for my undies hehe, but because of the work it takes.

Wow, it's almost time for you and Gabi to come back? That was fast!

I love the pictures. It reminds me of home, specially Santos. I recognize the streets, the walls... the beach. I miss it!

Enjoy the rest of your time there.

  14. rofl, that is way too funny! And I love that you thought about this in advance! Our laundry too is right off the kitchen. But we lug our basket to the back bedroom (that isn't being used) and hang the stuff out on that patio. I don't mind mine hanging out there, only the people in the apartments higher up than mine can see!

    38 pairs?? that's a lot. I don't think I have that many either. ;)

  15. LOL! I'd be doing the same thing, though... no way would my undies be hanging for everyone to see!

  16. What is it with MIL's wanting to wash clothes? That's my MIL's favorite thing to do to relax... though she's in Newport Beach and thankfully uses the dryer - so I'm ALL over her taking care of it!

Sounds like you're having a blast. I'm enjoying your updates - despite my lack of commenting recently!!

  17. I'm with you. I certainly would not want mine on display.

  18. Haha...that's hilarious. I wouldn't let her wash them either, but still, I can't belive you brought 38 pairs with you. Now, that's planning!

  19. Laural, you are an absolute treasure. I must meet you when you come back! :) I just got such a good laugh to start my morning.

And I'll have you know I had a similar skirmish on the other side of the globe. My MIL disapproves of using their dryer, even though they have one. She wanted me to hang my stuff outside. Having experienced the native fauna, it was not happening. Finally, she said, "You know, Samantha, no one cares about seeing your knickers." "That's good," I said, "Because no one is going to, not with the risk of geckos and fist-sized furry spiders making their home in them."

  20. Hilarious!!!!!! You are too funny!
We renovated our apartment and the first thing I did was tear out the laundry room on the side of the kitchen and make it a "breakfast nook" or whatever you want to call it. I moved the laundry where it should be - a separate enclosed room across the terrace! I hate that I have to look out the window and see my neighbors underwear hanging out to dry.
    But goodness -- I don't think I own 38 pairs! lol!

  21. This was hilarious! I would have done the same thing. Fortunately we scored a small yet good-enough-for-underwear dryer that a former employee from my husbands company had down here. I hope you have a safe trip!

  22. You are such a planner!
I love to hang clothes, but really underware?
Those, along with socks and towels have to go in the dryer so they are as soft as possible. ;-)

  23. 38 pairs? You must have had to bring a whole extra suitcase just for your underwear! haha!

  24. Omg! I would rather pull out every single one of my eyelashes than have my MIL wash and hang my undies to dry in the kitchen. You are a smart girl!
