Cake Coma

I'm in a bit of a cake coma at the moment.

That's what happens when you consume a lot of cake over a short period of time. You go into a coma. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you knew you were never going to have cake ever again in your life. Then it'd be worth it.

But me? I know I will have cake again, so I don't know what the heck happened to me. I sure ACTED like I was never going to have it again.

If you ever need to gain six pounds in a week, just ask me! I know how! Try to do it around a holiday and a birthday, and throw in the threat of a looming diet for a bit of desperation, and the poundage is limitless. I actually should be thanking my lucky stars that I only gained six.

It all started with the 4th of July festivities. I decided to make some more S'mores, and then all of a sudden I had whipped up some chocolate chip cookie bars and my famous chocolate brownies with fudge frosting, too.

We did manage to eat some healthier food that weekend, like pizza, and fried chicken.

And then Gabi and Gilberto's birthday was the coming Wednesday, and I knew there'd be a birthday dinner on Tuesday at our favorite Chinese restaurant, followed on their actual birthday by pizza and cake and icecream. And I knew the cake would last a few days. So I decided to NOT go back on my diet until the next weekend so I could enjoy all the food without worrying about carbs and calories.

And since I was off my diet, why not have a grilled cheese sandwich? And some pasta! And a hamburger on a real bun! Forget about what gluten does to my insides, this was my week to go for it!

That's how I gained back SIX WHOLE POUNDS in a week.

And now here I am on Friday, feeling crappy enough from my sugar and wheat extravaganza that I'm starting back on my diet a whole day early. I seriously could not eat another piece of cake if you PAID me (and that is saying a lot- usually I'd pay YOU).

My black work shoes are sqeaking again, my baggy clothes are not so baggy anymore, and my face has resumed a slightly more chubby appearance.

All that hard work from before wiped out. Not to mention all the times I've written here about getting revved up again, only to fail. It's getting a bit embarrassing. And so not worth it.

NOT WORTH IT, LAURAL!

I know I can do it. I did it before, and I'll do it again.

So as of today, I'm back on the diet. And so for so good! Though it's only 9:00 in the morning.

  6. I'm a serious foodie that I don't think I could ever limit myself and what I like to eat.

Cake? Sometimes that's just breakfast... other times it's cookies.

And savory foods - forget about it. I could eat 'til I explode from the salt content!

  8. Don't be so hard on yourself Laural!

It's July, there's lots going on and it's normal to slip up like that. Keep your goals reasonable . . . have an occasional treat and then go back to Atkins the next day. I am doing things slowly, not cutting out every little thing but just eating better overall. It is definitely helping . . . but even I get all giddy and mushy when a piece of cake is calling out my name.

Six pounds is NOTHING. You can totally do it!!!!

  9. I am so wanting a s'more right now! I will have to try out that recipe. Thanks for sharing!
We all have to indulge once in awhile! You're being too hard on yourself. You'll work it all off walking around at Disneyland!

  10. Oh how I could have written those words myself...several times over.

All seriousness aside, why is it that kids never go into sugar comas? Wouldn't it be lovely, if on the return from Chuck E Cheese and consuming mass quantities of pizza, cake and sugar laden drinks, they all fell into a deep sleep for several hours? Yeah...not gonna happen. But it's a nice dream.

    YOU CAN DO IT!

  14. We all fall off the boat sometimes. And it's usually worth it at the moment. I'm sorry you feel icky, but glad you felt icky enough to put yourself back on your diet with no reservations, and a day earlier at that! Good for you! You will do this because I know how much you want it!

  15. I so understand the feeling - We DO know better don't we, but yet the cake calls our name almost subliminally!

Hang in there and good for you for getting back on track - I am slowly learning to just look at these situations as opportunities to just make a U-Turn - Instead of continuing to go in the wrong direction, you just U-Turn and get back on the right track - It is really challenging, but definitely a healthier way to go! Good luck... I am also starting a detox cleanse today and will hopefully jump start myself in the right direction and get off of all of the junk.

  16. I can't lie . . . I'm all over the cake coma.

I even started making "healthy" versions. I used a can of pumpkin w/ either dark chocolate or butter/yellow cake mixes. Healthier, at least, right?

Yeah, not after you smother it with butter cream frosting (and then finish off the tub . . . ).

  17. That's great that you got back on track a day early! I know it can be hard to lose the weight though....seems like we can gain it without a second glance, but losing it is a whole other story :) Good luck!

  18. Have you noticed how hard it is to loose weight, and how easy it is to gain!!! I hate that. I wish all the good yummy stuff were actually the healthy ones, haha.
I am that way, if I "allow myself" to a day or weekend to eat whatever I want I really DO eat whatever I want, and I won't stop until I see the end of it. But you know what? It's good to go wild once in a while, we deserve it. You deserve it Laural.

  21. You didn’t tell them you gave your neighbor a nice chunk of the s’mores, the brownies and the cake. What about my diet efforts?
